with other engineers in the Protection Engineering department of
Southern California Edison's Transmission & Distribution
Organizational Unit. Through innovation they will provide
protection engineering expertise to support SCE stakeholders on:
capital projects as well as in the daily operations/maintenance of

- Support all capital program type projects (DSP, TSP, SUB IR,
DSERP, etc.)
- Design protective relaying systems to ensure the safety and
reliability of the SCE grid by reviewing AC/DC/Logic drawings
- Provide support to the Grid Control Center (GCC) on daily
system operations by monitoring and analyzing the performance of
the protective relaying systems installed as well as providing
valuable analysis to GCC and SC&M to facilitate problem
resolutions
- Review and analyze daily relay operations for determining
correct operation or mis-operation in response to electrical system
disturbances and anomalies. Make appropriate
recommendation/resolution for mitigation to Operations as well as
report to partner Org. Units within SCE.
- Perform system studies, provide protection requirements for
design, review and sign off one-line, elementary, logic diagrams
and work with other discipline engineers - substation engineers,
Distribution Field engineers, project engineers, apparatus
engineers - to support sub transmission and distribution substation
expansion, substation automation and infrastructure replacement
projects.
- Gather and evaluate line data of transmission,
sub-transmission, distribution systems, transformer test data,
generator data, etc. Model systems on appropriate software tool,
such as CAPE, perform short circuit studies, and protection
coordination studies necessary for completing relay settings,
perform relay settings, prepare protection summary, coordinate
relay settings with neighboring utilities, balancing authorities
and perform other required assignments meeting WECC and NERC PRC
compliance.
- Issue Substation Relays and field Auto recloser settings (GE,
SEL and Electromagnetic) via ASPEN relay database to the field,
support Test technicians in-servicing or commissioning relay
settings, review/approve returned as-left relay setting files, and
communicate with Test technicians for making revisions/changes to
relay settings as necessary.
- Analyze post-fault event using historical data such as DFR
traces, digital relay records, or related data.
- Knowledge of digital logic design principles (logic gates,
latches, etc.) and experience in developing logic diagrams
- Provide support to the Test Technicians and Operators.
- Travel to the field may be required from time to time per
project job walk or testing needs. Qualifications
The essentials
- Experience with protection engineering in the electric utility
industry or equivalent
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related
technical discipline.
- Five years of engineering experience
- Knowledge of System One-Line Diagram and relay AC and DC
Schematics
- Experience in developing relay settings and familiarity with
relay setting software (GE EnerVista UR Setup, SEL AcSELerator) The
preferred
- Bachelor or Master's Degree Electrical Engineering with an
emphasis in preferably 'Power' option.
- Knowledge of digital logic design principles (logic gates,
latches, etc.) and experience in developing logic diagrams
- Knowledge of transmission system operation (line-and-bus
arrangements, reclosing practices, etc.)
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience related to Protection
Engineering preferred.
- California P.E. License
- Experience developing and delivering technical presentations to
both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Familiarity with use of AutoCAD software for preparing logic
diagrams You should know
- This position's work mode is hybrid. The employee will report
to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work
remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees
are required to reside in the state of California. Further details
