Summary Job Purpose : Directly performs and supervises nursing care
and all related activities of the Center according to the policies
and objectives of the center. Includes responsibility for all
aspects of environmental control, staff personnel, assistance to
physicians, material and equipment, education of personnel, and all
administrative duties. May delegate responsibilities and duties to
other personnel, both professional and non-professional.
Coordinates operating activities when necessary. Analyzes and
evaluates nursing services to improve the quality care given.
Participates in Quality Improvement Program to improve patient
care. Is accountable for all aspects of nursing service. Provides,
supervises and directs all nursing care given to patients within
the surgery suite according to nursing principles. Insures
post-operative phone calls completed by self or by staff personnel
to promote continuity of patient care. Provides patient care or
delegates responsibility of the procedure room and recovery area to
appropriate personnel for immediate patient care. Ensures that safe
and adequate transportation is available for patients – delegates
as appropriate. Provides pre- and post-operative teaching to
patients to ensure patients have awareness of self-care (what to
eat/not eat, prescriptions, etc.) Applies policies and objectives
of the Center to insure consistent quality of nursing care.
Provides safe environment for patients and personnel. Supervises
care of suite and equipment to insure cleanliness, sterility – as
appropriate - and operational ability of all items. Directs all
safety measures to prevent accidents, harm or injury in any way of
patient, personnel, or equipment. Controls traffic to prevent
infections. Insures proper temperature, ventilation, and lighting
to provide as comfortable as possible a working environment.
Provides and insures use of checking and control methods for
determination of safe environment. Assists physicians during
procedures through provision of adequate, qualified personnel.
Formulates personnel schedule to provide personnel available for
all procedures. Assures presence of qualified personnel at all
procedures to provide good patient care as directed by standards
and policies. Plans assignments for personnel and delegates
specific duties and tasks. Provides direct patient care as
required. Supervises and directs duties and jobs performed by staff
personnel. Provides and controls medical supplies, and equipment
needed for successful operation of the surgery suite. Directs and
delegates control of inventories to insure proper amount available.
Supervises care and cleanliness of equipment and supplies to insure
good working conditions. Evaluates needs for new or different items
in regard to present and new trends and needs of the center.
Observes use and handling of supplies to decrease mishandling or
incorrect methods. Establishes par levels to ensure proper
operation of the center. Orders medical supplies to ensure par
levels maintained Delegates responsibility to professional staff
for ongoing education of others and self. Insures staff attendance
at inservice and other educational meetings. Provides ongoing
opportunities of challenge and learning for staff to increase
knowledge and experience. Encourages staff toward self improvement
and education. Provides comprehensive orientation program for all
staff members. Plans, controls, directs, and coordinates all
administrative duties to insure proper functioning of department
and personnel. Formulates and periodically evaluates philosophy,
objectives, procedures, and policies of Center to help others and
keep them current and up to date Writes evaluations of personnel
that are supervised. Assists with clinic duties as requested by
Medical Director Sees patients with physicians, assisting with
intake, documentation during patient visit and patient teaching,
assists with turnover of room, bringing patients to and from the
exam rooms.8. Ensures that documentation is complete for Center
Completes appropriate documentation in the medical record and
ensures that physician and patient complete their appropriate
documentation Completes or directs completion of all necessary logs
and checklists (procedure log, etc.) Reviews credential files of
staff and physicians on a regular basis to ensure evaluations are
performed in a timely manner, licensure and certifications are
accurate, current and complete. Actively participates in Quality
Improvement Program by seeing areas which can be improved, attends
meetings, writes QI studies, keeps an open mind to ways of
improvement Observes level of supplies, establishes standard par
levels, orders supplies to ensure proper and fluid operation of the
Center, puts supplies in their proper place when received at the
Center. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Ensures smooth operation of the
Center through proper scheduling of patients, scheduling of staff,
maintenance of the facility through cleanliness, presence of
appropriate supplies in adequate amounts. Provides direct patient
care to patients of the Center. Makes sure nursing staff,
physicians, anesthesia providers and non-medical staff are on duty
and ready to start cases on time; if problems arise, make changes
in schedule to meet physicians' needs. Assist with preparations,
positioning of patient, unusual procedures, transfer of patients,
use of equipment and all needed to get room ready and cases
started. Help with coffee and lunch breaks, if possible, in all
areas. Assist physicians in any way possible to make their time an
efficient and pleasant experience. Has supervision over all nursing
and para-medical personnel. Maintains personnel and work records
for nursing personnel. Oversees of ordering medical supplies when
needed. Assures that all medical instruments and equipment are in
good working order. Assures that all carts, specialty packs and
sets are prepared and ready for use when needed. Assures that
emergency supplies and equipment are on hand and ready when needed.
Assures that lab specimens are collected and transferred to the
laboratory. Maintains record of surgeons’ preferences in supplies.
Supervises the taking of cultures in designated areas. Establishes
and maintains an in-service training program. Adjusts schedules as
needed SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists physicians with seeing
patients during clinic hours Assists in covering vacancies in
nursing staff. Assists in scheduling functions when needed. Assists
office personnel as needed. Sees salesmen when possible. Serves on
the Quality Improvement Committee. QUALIFICATIONS: Physical
Requirements Good physical health required (able to lift 50 pounds)
Must be well coordinated and able to move about freely Dexterity

distinctly Neat, clean and particular about appearance Abilities
Understanding, tact, and patience in dealing with patients,
personnel, visitors, and doctors. Finely developed powers of

foster leadership potential. Performs additional duties as directed
by the Medical Director to assist in the smooth operation of the
Center and provision of quality care to the patients Education :
Registered Nurse with a current license in the State. Current CPR
card (ACLS preferred). This position requires Infection Control
training. Work experience : At least three months O.R. or Recovery
Room experience within the last three years. Some supervisory
experience within the last three years. Skills : Ability to be
self-directing, ability to take direction from physicians and
managers as appropriate, ability to direct Procedure Room and
Recovery Room staff, strong technical and organizational skills.
Physical requirements : ability to stand, reach or assist to
transfer up to 50 pounds; ability to stand and/or walk 80-90% of an
8 hour day; visual and hearing acuity to perform job related
